Iris Stovall
Iris K. Stovall received Doctor of Philosophy in Agronomy from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1978 and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology
from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville in 1972. She joined the
Chemistry Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
in 1979 and remained in Chemistry as Assistant Director of the General
Chemistry Program until November 1997. While in Chemistry she became interested
in using computers to teach and wrote a series of lessons incorporating
video, images, graphics and interactive problems for use by undergraduates
in College chemistry and published in CD format. Along with colleagues,
she wrote quizzing software, interactive pre-lab lessons and a student-instructor
gradebook. During the Fall 1997 semester, she taught an Introductory Chemistry
course that was primarily Internet based. In November 1997 she left the
Chemistry Department to join the Illinois OnLine Network project. In that
capacity she is responsible for promoting Internet based education through
the State of Illinois. She recommends software for Internet development
and provides technical assistance for Colleges that are developing Internet
education. She is a consultant for UNESCO in the use of educational technology
and has given talks and workshops throughout the Middle East on that topic.
