Leaunda Hemphill
Hi! My name is Leaunda Hemphill and I teach K12 technology integration and instructional design at Western Illinois University in the Instructional Technology and Telecommunications Department. At National-Louis University, I taught educators to use technology effectively in their instructional planning and with their students in the classroom. I taught Prairie State College faculty how to integrate technology in their instruction. I also taught English and computer applications classes using web-based course manager software packages.
I have a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology and have worked in instructional
design, training delivery, and cutting-edge technology in corporate and
academic organizations. I also have a M.S. in English, a B.S. in Secondary
Education (teaching certification in English and Earth Science), and a
B.S. in Geology. I have completed my ION Master Online Teacher Certificate.
Interestingly, all my career choices have led back to teaching and training.
I love teaching and advising students of diverse ages, abilities, cultures,
and professions.
In 1979, I took my first distance education course that used videotaped
lectures and Scantron tests. Considering that the instructor had been
dead for six years, I am using the term "distance education"
loosely as "instructional activities where the learner and instructor
are separated by time and space" (Keegan, 1988), without student-teacher
interaction or individualized feedback!
Ten years ago, I became interested in using computer technology for writing
and collaboration in the classroom. Since the mid-1990s, I have also been
designing online webpages, surveys and evaluations, databases, newsletters,
and electronic journals; teaching faculty members how to develop instructionally
sound webpages; and evaluating instructional technology projects. I believe
that the choice of technologies for instruction should be based on their
appropriateness to the content and their accessibility to users. I see
online learning as one more tool in our repertoire of teaching options.
I am currently researching the effects of laptop computers in pre-service teacher education. My recent projects include the development of learner profile surveys
for online and computer-assisted instruction, development of K-12 online
teaching modules, construction of an instrument to assess the interactivity
of online instruction, development of scoring procotols for evaluating
the quality of student online writing products, evaluation of online
informal science education sites, and evaluation of technology workshops for K12 teachers, principals, and parents.
I look forward to working with you!
