What is the Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality (MVCR) program?
MVCR came into existence on the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University
of Illinois in 1998 to help faculty at community colleges in the state of
Illinois and at the University of Illinois to learn more about effective pedagogies
and technologies to develop and create online courses, and to begin the process
of incorporating technology into face-to-face courses. Since then it has expanded
to provide faculty development for any faculty or staff member in the US and
in other countries.
What qualifications do I need to teach MVCR courses?
Instructors should have a minimum of a master's degree in an academic discipline.
In addition, we ask that all MVCR instructors have experience teaching online
using asynchronous conferencing.
What technical skills do I need to have?
Potential instructors should be comfortable using a computer, browsers and
the Internet, e-mail, e-mail attachments and a word processor. Specific skills
such as using conferencing software or WebCT can be learned during the instructor
orientation. In addition, potential instructors should be able to connect
their computers to the Internet.
How does teaching an MVCR course differ from traditional classroom teaching?
The participants in MVCR courses are primarily faculty, staff and administrators
from institutions of higher education. Almost all have full time jobs. You
can expect many of them to participate in the early morning or in the evening
and on weekends. Participants will have a rich perspective on the educational
process since most are professionals.
How many participants will be in my course?
MVCR courses are limited to a maximum of twenty-three participants. A small
class size allows you to communicate and exchange ideas with each participant
and allows participants to communicate with each other.
Will I need to develop my own course?
No, MVCR staff have developed the courses. MVCR instructors are the facilitators
for course discussions and administrators and managers of course delivery.
