Appendix
(especially positive comments in italics)

Comments for Question 1:

  • The physical facility of the lower ISR dining room was less useful than the other areas used! Very difficult to see the screen.
  • First breakout sessions at CCSO lab at Comm West was locked.
  • Chairs in plenary sessions were very uncomfortable.
  • Enjoyable, worthwhile conference--learned a lot.
  • I learned more in 3 1/2 days than I've learned during the past 2 years!
  • Repeat talks by Iris Stovall and Cathy Gunn. They should know who their audience is and prepare a new presentation.
  • The Hard Science breakout was well done, just too specific. Would like to have discussed other issues.
  • I think that we needed fewer lecture/pump-ups and more quality hands-on exp.
  • Sessions too long!
  • 3rd time I've heard Oakley's presentation
    2nd time I've heard Gunn's.
  • Power Point over-used, although improvement from initial conference. The conference is a face-to-face transaction... or should be.
  • Superb! Sessions & food, very nice people, but clean up the bathrooms (dorm).
  • The food served was the best of any institute/conference/seminar I have attended. The accommodations at the Student Union were also good.
  • The afternoon sessions don't need the additional 45 minutes.
  • Best faculty development event I've ever been a part of.
  • Well organized. Great presenters in breakouts.
  • Jennifer Lieberman--Great Teacher!
  • Afternoon sessions too long; too much time between sessions.
  • Overall, an excellent conference. I learned and was motivated to learn more.
  • Meals were outstanding. Plenary session with Cathy Gunn was disappointing.
  • Some locations for breakout sessions were too distant.
  • Well run institute.

  • Appreciated sessions beginning and ending on time.
  • Wish I had the answer-topics great, facilitating topics needs work.
  • I've been looking forward to the FSI for months.
  • Do not use Oregon St Lab. Poor ventilation.
  • The three sessions with Jennifer Lieberman were outstanding!!

  • Speeches were too long & boring.
  • Need more interaction/not just reading prepared slides.
  • The hands-on and demo breakouts were slow getting into it.
  • overall very good
  • Handouts would have been helpful in all plenary & breakout sessions.
  • I attended a lecture in a computer lab--NO GOOD!
  • good intro to issues and technologies available.
  • Overall good conference. Include more higher level workshops.
  • Some breakouts, although listed as beginning, moved way too fast. Too much knowledge was assumed, I think!
  • Too hard to hear and see presentations
  • The commerce lab was a very poor facility, too far away also. Lunch on Wed was too long; shortened session IV
  • Plenary speakers seem to be at every conference I attend.
  • IBHE session was a 4.
  • Earlier bus schedule; Jake's good!
  • Fewer plenary sessions needed. Hands-on training sessions were excellent. Copyright plenary was on target.
  • Would like to have received the map via mail prior to coming rather than upon arrival. Internet map not that helpful. Everything else very well done.
  • Some distant walks.
  • Sanders, Cipfl & Oakley recycled talks we've already heard here or elsewhere.
  • Create more hands-on breakouts! Wonderful food!

  • It was especially helpful to discuss the impact of all this on the lives of the instructors (working conditions issues)
  • The political implications of educational technology gets to put courses on the web, who gets the tuition, who make the policy, how web based courses will be related to classroom instruction for ex.
  • This is a continuous long term learning process.
  • This was great; the only problems had to do with logistics, equipment, etc.
  • Thank you
  • I actually came here with some previous knowledge.

Answers to Question 10 (how could the institute have better met your needs?):

  • Build in reflective time between sessions
  • Better logistics. One session started late and one lunch late.
  • Afternoon sessions were too long. They were interesting, but too long.
  • Well done! I want to participate next year! Hope to take Jennifer's Online course. Excellent info & resources
  • Go back to 3 days rather than 4.
  • Excellent conference. Could probably shorten to 2 1/2 days. Drop Thurs morning. Some of us are still in school.
  • Some sessions were too long. Shorter sessions. More comfortable chairs.
  • It met all of my expectations.
  • Better plenary sessions, better rooms for breakout sessions, having a discussion in a lab was impossible, need better audio mics
  • Evening activities or workshops.
  • Condense the time spent here. Could have fit in 2-3 days, rather than 4. Too much idle time.
  • Some sessions were too long. Shorter sessions. More comfortable chairs.
  • I don't know how. It was very well done.
  • More in depth workshops on actually developing a course.
  • Keep the same.
  • Rules for teaching deaf folks in the classroom are: pausing after showing something until you get eye contact, don't talk while directing attention to the computer screen or board, don't talk, demonstrate & point at the same time. The hearing folks benefit
  • Didn't really know I had any needs until after the sessions.
  • More face to face with others in my field (composition). More critique of possibilities & responsibilities. More on the quality of education that technology enables.
  • More time to work with the consultants on a machine with real problems.
  • Vegetarian food
  • Provide opportunity to create a mini module or home page individualized.
  • Provide time to sit with others and actually work through general step by step set up of their online courses.
  • What I'd like is for next year's conference to have "tracks" for breakout sessions, i.e. a FrontPage track or online courses track. People who sign up for a track would go through all 5 sessions. Also, one concern is that less prepared faculty participant
  • This was a positive experience and I'm already looking forward to next year. Very well done. Especially appreciated was the variety offered in the program!
  • More hands-on with WebCT. I guess I thought this was the "software" of choice for ION??
  • By considering a session driven by teaching/learning issues in the face of "can do" technology. (addressing the should do issues) Same presentations as last year-NO. Maybe not totally-interesting, but...I'm way beyond good info, new info useful.
  • If it were possible to have the breakouts in one area. I dealt with a physical disability. Many places did not have elevators. All sessions were good and we should be able to link or have handouts from each.
  • I also enjoyed the online over sessions, hands-on training. I'm a tactile learner. Fine job. I want to come back next year after I have taught online. This, of course does not answer the above question. You did a great job!
  • Having access to computers at ISR in the evenings, so we could practice what we learned. More cave tickets. I wasn't informed prior to registration. Have evening sessions/seminars.
  • Plenary session-very uncomfortable wooden straight back chairs, placed too closely together.2) For poster session, use Gateway projection screens (31" +) on tall carts.
  • Specific track/sessions for tech support staff.
  • Encourage the use of handouts by all presenters. Use a portable microphone for plenary session presenters.
  • Make it 3 days-1st day could include a breakout session (even in the evening) The heavy hors d'oeuvres were plenty. Start at 1:00-opening keynote-dinner-do a session/2nd day-omit plenary-do sessions all day/3rd day-finish
  • More presenters with faculty experience using online technology. This will come with time.
  • Institute participants would be better served if learning tracks were used instead of the hodge podge of courses used now. Too much material was crammed into a very short time frame in some cases.
  • The food was sooo good. I ate way too much.
  • I would have liked to have seen more with respect to tools, such as course management systems. While the presenters and staff of the ION demonstrate a great deal of passion with respect to this mode of deliver, I am still not convinced that it is what we
  • The JavaScripting breakout did not teach much beyond what I already knew but it was all that could be done in the time available. For a topic like this you might do a morning & afternoon session to give a more in depth presentation of this topic.
  • More comfortable chairs in the lower dining room at ISR.
  • Nothing--great job!
  • More discussion/critique of difficult issues (e.g. some raised by Dr. Sanders) and less cheerleading and its effective uses/non-uses.
  • Offer a few modules that carry a mini-training course over 3 days (say T,W,Th a.m.)--develop project, etc. over 3 days/maybe brainstorming on a particular topic.
  • Shorter afternoon sessions. Also, I think all disciplinary sessions should be held in conference or class rooms to make discussion easier. (no computer labs). I would have liked to have had 2 shorter afternoon sessions with more repetition of the break-o
  • Excellent as was!
  • Good show--better than last year. The longer sessions were a good idea.
  • Well done.
  • Condense into 3 days.
  • Hand-on 1/2 day or more sessions on WebCT. I really appreciated the sessions with Jennifer. She got me thinking about ways to get my students involved and thinking.
  • Total package of online materials from all sessions.
  • Plenary sessions seating awful. Could we sit around tables? Have more breaks? Can't see screen.
  • Last an entire week.
  • Could not have--Well done!!
  • I would have been happy to use the evenings for the FSI and be done sooner. It didn't need to be a 4 day event as it was. Could have put more into the 4 days if that was a preset.
  • It was okay.
  • I can't imagine.
  • Better tracking of people with different skills.
  • No help on assessments; no handouts/limited web access to notes; not very practical nor evaluative, wants more descriptive. Put the next conference on a web board and make it one of the 1st sessions.
  • I wanted to attend more hands-on sessions. There were conflicts and not enough of them. Perhaps 6 or 7 or even 8 sessions would be better.
  • Separate classes for slower & classes for more advanced students-more time to work with programs.
  • Yes, by shortening the sessions times!
  • Sessions where disciplines could meet and shave ideas/software techniques.
  • Just do another next year and let me come.
  • Had there been a session on the creation of instructional CD-ROM, preferably interactive, but also presentational, would have benefited more directly.
  • Handouts and web pages a post conference web board
  • Limit afternoon breakout sessions to 2 hours and end at 4:00.
  • More hands-on experience; less lectures
  • More real discussions for technical issues.
  • More discussion with other schools on what they are doing with online courses.
  • Compact into 3 days instead of 4.
  • Can't think of anything.
  • Smaller breakout sessions
  • Needed elevators running. Although not in a wheelchair, my arthritis makes stairs difficult. Busses could run earlier, some sessions got finished early.
  • Offer a discipline-based session with someone who has more experience than me.
  • More hands-on.
  • Plenary sessions handout or outlines.
  • It was very well done.
  • Do away with the plenary sessions--at 8:30 am I'm ready to begin training!! However the last plenary session on copyright was very helpful and enjoyable. I appreciate being made aware of these significant issues.
  • Improve the sound system.
  • More hands-on workshops; let us do more, try things out. 2-2 1/2 hours is too long to sit still, even for us academic types; Advise your presenters that Power Point is overrated, especially if the audience also gets a hard copy of the presentation; this r
  • Redefine what beginner means; ask people more specific questions to determine if they are really beginners.
