Workshop Description

Come learn how you can implement synchronous tools in your online classroom as another way to encourage communication and collaboration. In this workshop, we will discuss competencies and facilitation strategies for successfully implementing Chat, Audio Only, and Web Conferencing applications into your online classes. Attendees will participate in a chat and web conference session as a part of this fun and exciting program.

Goal
Introduce competencies and facilitation strategies for successfully implementing Chat, Audio Only, and Web Conferencing applications into your online classes.

Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify Chat, Audio, and Web-Conferencing tools available and be able to evaluate the different tools based on criteria such as technical requirements, limitations, and expense.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating these tools in online classrooms
  • Identify preparatory tasks needed for successful implementation of these tools
  • Identify strategies for facilitating in these environments

Outcomes
During this course, participants will:

  • Participate in an Online Chat session
  • Participate in an Online Conference using Elluminate Live

 

Pedagogical Uses for Synchronous Communication

Synchronous Classroom
Instructors can hold class sessions synchronously as a way to introduce students to policies, procedures, expectations, and to orientate them to the online envirionment using application sharing or web tours. Synchnronous tools are a great way to encourage interaction and collaboration through the use of breakout rooms and/or private chat.

Group Meetings
Instructors who require their students to work in groups can offer synchronous tools as a way for groups to meet, discuss, and complete class assignments.

Synchronous Office Hours
Instructors can you synchronous tools to hold office hours, group meetings, or individual meetings to discuss projects, offer direction, and provide additional resources.
