Use the menu at the right to view current FSI information. Below,
you will find a compilation of FSI Evaluations. Login to ION using the form
at the top right to see additional evaluations information depending on your
user level.
A total
of 200 community college administrators, faculty and staff attended the
Faculty Summer Institute and 77 (44 %) of them turned in their evaluation
forms. Survey questions are shown in italics. Beneath each question
where more summary statistics are given, "respondents" refers
to respondents who answered the question being summarized. []'s indicate
comments of evaluator. Personal items are removed for privacy reasons and
replaced with a tally at the end of each comments section. One item that
we did not have control over at the time was the table placement at the
roundtable sessions. You will see a lot of comments about this that will
be addressed next year.

Comments:
- A great way to meet others interested in online learning, both novices & experts.
- First time attending this conference-very verbose and engaging
- Roundtable session was too loud, couldn't hear anything at my table
- I always gain something useful I can take back, although this year's
sessions did not seem, overall, as useful as last year's. Many of the presenters
were low-energy and talked [underline] at us, which is what we try to get
away from in "best Practices", right?
- (would suggest roundtable in classrooms - too loud in hall - couldn't
hear. But [u]great idea).
- I wish all entire faculty could be made more aware of online teaching
opportunities/ideas.
- I would recommend this institute to a colleague who has some knowledge
of online learning-one who has taken at least one online course. The material
seems to be on level above absolute beginners who have [u] NO online learning/teaching
experience.
- N/A
- Well organized, pleasantly managed, and informative
- TIMELY INFO.
- [both yes and no circled] I would recommend this to a colleague who
has taught an online class; however, I would [u]NOT recommed [typo] this
conference to a beginner.
- A great idea for all levels of online teaching - not just those who
are already started in it.
- All of the sessions, keynotes, were wonderful. Loved being able to stay
on campus. Roundtable would be better is [typo] tables were spread out.
- It is especially helpful to those of us who are just beginning to offer
online courses / assignments
- Split out concurrent session to smaller sessions for ability to see
more
- I really like the interdisciplinary participation. Conference is very
inspiring
- The disscussions about blended courses were particularly useful to me
{the [u]BEST of Both Worlds!)
- as stated in welcome, this is geared towards new instructors. It would
be good to provide professional development for other online instructors
as well.
- Great!
- Clearly for beginners -> intermediate it was excellent. Seasoned
participants could also find applicable sessions & networking could
be very valuable. Actually many more sessions available than I could attend!
- A great atmosphere for newbies to learn and gather expert advice from
faculty who are currently teaching online.
- This was my first time here and it was good to hear from Expereinced
online users & other novice
- Good variety of sessions to address issues for instructors at all levels
of on-line usage
- Excellent information
- Excellent resources
- Too long between some sessions
- An excellent choice of breaking sessions -
- Hard to hear at Roundtable
- [both circled] depends - - some really useful things - - but hard to
know what sessions were appropriate
- FOR SOMEONE NEW TO ONLINE ED
- I would recommend the institute to beginning online instructors
- Newbies could attend 2-3 times in a row to fully understand
- Roundtables too close & noisy.

- content based topics
(as concurrent) would be helpful, too -- Math, English, Nursing, Humanities...
There were a [u]large number of topics that were presented this time

8. To what extent
did the FSI increase you understanding or knowledge, and in what areas
did you learn the most?
- I'm a novice, so just about everything I heard about was of some use.
- I learned a great deal about instructional design.
- I benefitted most from the "Innovative Technologies" and "software
Skills Development" aspects of this institute.
- -New Technologies -Assessment
- -what others are doing -support that "I am on the right track"
- Perhaps my selection (of sessions) was deficient, but I hoped for more
samples & examples of format & less discussion of problems, ie
technology deficiency.
- The scenario-based activites [number removed] is the most exciting to
me, and I will combine this info with the interactive Power Point info
to create some innovative projects for students for fall.
- Getting started. I have a clearer direction now with some ideas to use.
- Helped me see possibilites
- I have been involved with online efforts for about a year, but am new
to teaching my own online course. FSI is invaluable to help me prepare
my own class [can't read] offerings.
- Facilitating asynchronious discussion Managing time Learning objectives
- writing
- I learned at every session, because it is all new to me.
- Immenseley and objectively.
- The 1st time the course is taught, it won't be perfect. Plan on making
changes on going.
- greatly, enhanced Web.site AND ON-LINe AVAIL.
- It gave me an idea of how much work is involved and things I should
avoid.
- Greatly increased my online capabilites to develop a course Software
availability is the area I learned the most about.
- problems of online instructing
- I GAINED A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE. THANKS....
- THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE THOUGHT PROVOKING KEYNOTE PRESENTATION DELIVERED
BY RAY SCHROEDER. CAN'T WAIT TO SHARE THE INFORMATION & DISCUSS IT
WITH COLLEAGUES.
- - Blended courses - making online courses more personal
- 25-30% INCREASE ONLINE COURSE DESIGN
- blended classes / discussion board w/ face to face
- technology - Pedagogy
- I knew quite a bit but picked up on some new ideas & reinforced
others.
- The more informative portions of the conference was to learn of all
the outside resources that are available.

- the helpful hints/tips (small strategies) were best
- course development
- What's going on at other CC's & what's coming up in the future

9. How could the
institute better meet your needs?
- I'm [u] very satisfied
with all the resources provided by the institute.
- Too many concurrent
sessions were offered at one time. Perhaps the sessions could be shorter
in length and allow for more to be attended throughout the day. Most
were 15 min too long. The "second" electronic showcase on Tuesday
wasn't fruitful. I would have liked to have attended another session
during that time-as there were many sessions that appealed to me but
could not attend. Overall content of sessions was great - just couldn't
be in multiple places at one time :)
- Strategies & Pedagogy
- [at bottom] Thanks!
- As in #5, offer
sessions in a repeated time frame.
- [u] Roundtables
- too noisy - please separate and then after a set amount of time (20
or 30 mins.) ask us to switch. Also, please offer some discussions that
step outside the [words replaced with 'box']- a "best practices" table
or two would have been more useful, particularly for those who have completed
one or more MVCR courses. I would like to see more activites designed
for those attendees who have taken one or more MVCR courses - more in-depth,
hands-on workshops and best practices discussions. I was frustrated in
the [name removed] session - it was supposed to be geared for intermediate
users, but so many beginners were in the class that it became too slow
and tedious. I could have simply taken the handout and CD and spent my
time more effectively in another session simply because of the range
of students' abilites in this session.
- So many good topics,
Hard to decide which one to go to.
- More specific discipline-area
[can't read] supports, possibly--.
- Select sessions
before-hand, send any reading material in advance so we can have a deeper
discussion in the sessions. Do beginner sessions at a very basic level
and offer advanced sessions, too so all practitioners can learn something
new.
- pedagogies
- Some hands on seminars
Applying theory into practice.
- Complete a [u] topic.
Don't throw it all at us. Give overview then pick 1-3 topics to cover
[u] completely.
- Computer course
- have participants bring syllabus/floppy or CD and help with the development
ideas. I would like to have more ideas on how to set up an online course
- step by step.
- More computors Interactive
Workshops
- More hands-on. Actually
allow us to set up a class (practice)
- Tutorials.
- FOLLOW-UP EMAILS
ON STRATEGIES & "HOW TO" THOUGHTS
- I think that the
beginners Should be at the computer / talking about their experiences
for most of the concurrent sessions.
learning tech. - math
- MORE ROOM AT ROUND
TABLES. MORE TIME BETWEEN SOME EVENTS, DAY ONE - NEED TIME to CHECK INTO
HOTEL PM!
- more hands on -
in [u]each session - even rubrics
- better roundtable
setups - More [3u]demos -
- Finding the auditorium
was biggest problem. Perhaps have a scheduled tour.
- The next conference,
offer more than one occurence of a session. For example, I wanted to
see the integrated PowerPoint presentation and another session offered
at the same time. I couldn't do both.
- Someone available
to critique your online course.
- Pedagogies
- Shorten the program
to 2 days. Leave out the meals.
- More internet computer
stations
- see # 5's answer
a. [more concurrent sessions on pedagogy, assignment design, & assessment]
more opportunity for general, specific questions
- Too much time between
sessions. (The 1.5 hour time for classes, however, was great!)
- suggestion: provide
more transition time, especially when sessions are in different buildings
- Offer specific sections
for specific teaching areas (English, Business Educ, Math) History, Computer
- -
- SPEAKERS REQUIRED
TO GIVE HANDOUTS
- roundtables -> spread
out - very good
- Better exhibits
with literature; software, and opportunities for future development.
- tutorials
- SEPARATION BY DISCIPLINE?
GOOD EXAMPLES OF ON-LINE IN SPECIFIC AREAS.
- More [u]step [u]by
[u]step instruction
- ?
- [circled learning
technologies and tutorials from question]
- - Provide theoretical
basis - more techniques - more social opportunities
- . provide AS mAny
hands on Experiences as feasible for us do and learn it attendees.
- as a first timer
I found this a great Experience
- more tutorials
- Tutorials & technologies
more hands-on.
- I like the learning
technologies
- More hands on work
and info on Androgogy which targets adults. Pedagogy is Really for Kids!!!
- [circle and * for
learning technologies]
- More concurrent
sessions but not back to back - very tiring
- Keep offering basic
classes that might appeal to more advanced students as well - Thanks!
- up dates on technologies
- Discipline specific
might be useful.
- MORE ADVANCED SEMINAR
- Beginning ideas
for putting together an on-line class. I [u]have never taught nor put
one together. almost every Term & session was completely new to [u]me.
Maybe in the future separate program more into [very] beginner & more
advanced streams. [I thought we did that?]
- fine for now, glad
to know that I can assess info online
- more real examples
of effective online learning versus grab bag of "stuff" - Integration
is a priority
- Do more advanced
level concurrent sessions.
- Provide a glossary
of terms & acronymss [typo] in the program - ILCCO, ION, asynchronous,
etc. [on back]. During prizes, announce the gift pack is coming from
the institution but don't give an itemized list of the contents . 1/2
hour breaks were too long. . Overall, schedule could maybe be lightened
to be 2 days instead of 2 1/2.
- TOO MANY ACRONYMS
used by speakers. Bring in some student speakers to tell us their experiences
with on-line learning [good idea]
