Messaging in Moodle

Messaging is a new feature introduced in Moodle Version 1.5 which enables users to send private messages to other users.

This document will describe the main components (The Message Block, The Messages Window) and functions of the Messaging feature.

Messages Block

The Messages Block is located in the right column of MVCR Moodle courses.  From the Messages Block you can access the Message Window and reply to messages that are waiting for your response.

The Messages Window

Contacts Tab

The Contacts Tab allows you to view information about Moodle users that you have added to your Contact list.

Online Contacts

Users in your contact list that are currently logged into Moodle are listed here.  You can send an “instant” message to an online contact by clicking on the name link and typing a message in the Discussion Window.  The contact will be automatically notified that you have sent a message.  Clicking on the user image will open the user’s profile in a new window.

Offline Contacts

Users in your contact list that are NOT currently logged into Moodle are listed here.  You can send a message to an offline contact by clicking on the name link and typing a message in the Discussion Window.  The contact will be notified by email and/or in the Messages Block, depending on the contact’s Settings.

Incoming Contacts

If you have a pending message from a user in Moodle who is not in your Contacts list, the user who sent the message will be listed here.  You can click on the name link to read the message(s) and reply.  If you want to add this person to your contact list, click on the Add Contact Icon add_contact_icon .

Search Tab

The search tab allows you to search for a person from among the students only in your course or all students registered on the platform. You can also search for messages by typing a keyword (in the Keywords field) and defining a few search criteria such as whether or not to include blocked users or whether to search only messages from (or to) you or do both.
